Arezzo

Arezzo In the noble city of Arezzo one of the Capital city of the Tuscan province located on a hillside between Casentino, Valdichiana and the upper Valdarno, the splendid Renaissance flourished: palaces, streets and piazzas recall his history and his development of artisan especially goldcraft and industrial activities. Arezzo is the land of antiques and almost in every town and village there is something to discover. The city has given birth to famous people like Petrarch, Aretino and Vasari, and has maintained an extremely interesting historical and artistic tradition since the middle Ages. The historic centre contains stupendous works of art and testimonies from every era. The magnificent architecture hide extremely important museums: it is here that you can see close up the masterpieces of Beato Angelico, Pinturicchio, Signorelli and almost all of the great artists of the 14th, 15th and 16th century. Here the folklore relives in the festivals that have no equal: Saracen Games a horseback tournament of medieval origin, preceded by a solemn procession through the downtown streets; the last Sunday of August and the first Sunday of September, in Piazza Grande. Arezzo owes its name and its foundation to the Etruscans (4th century B.C.). In the Roman era, it became an important military outpost on the Via Cassia. Of lesser importance in the High Middle Ages, the city underwent an economic and building revival between the 9th and 12th centuries, thanks to the power exercised by the bishops. In 1098, it became a free commune. Conflict with the neighbouring cities of Siena and Florence intensified, until it suffered a grave blow from Florence in the battle of Campaldino (1289). In the 14th century, Arezzo definitively lost its freedom and passed under the Signori of the Medici. Only with the Unity of Italy, did the city again find the strength to reaffirm its administrative and economic importance. The Province of Arezzo keeps on amazing us with the beauty and richness of its lands. Surrounding the city is the greenery and silence typical of the Tuscan countryside. Among these worthy of notice is the upper valley the river Arno flows through. It is situated in the north-west of Tuscany and in the past was a perpetual object of feudal possession; the Florentine fought and fought in order to wrest the valley from Arezzo. Casentino has always been known also for its mystical beauty; that's the reason why S. Francesco chose La Verna to live and pray. He loved this place most for the rest of his life and it was here he received the stigmata. Here from the sanctuaries of Santa Margherita you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the Val di Chiana which reflects itself in the small lakes of Montepulciano and Chiusi and the larger Lake Trasimeno. Valdarno begins where the river Arno changes course and head north this land, during the Middle Ages was the scene of bloody battles between two cities: Guelph Florence and Ghibelline Arezzo. Here Montevarchi, medieval village. In the centre of the town we find Varchi's square, dedicated to the historical and humanist Benedetto Varchi (1503-1565), consul of the Florentine Academy, author of one of the first Dante's works critical edition. The territory of the Province of Arezzo includes also the Valtiberina, or High Tiber valley, which is the easternmost edge of Tuscany and gets its name from the river that crosses it. The Valtiberina was border and, at the same time, point of encounter between different civilizations, the Umbrian and the Etruscan, the Byzantine and Lombard... In the Feudal Age were built sturdy, bold castles, as well as monasteries where many saints often went to pray. In this land, rich of different uses, habits, architectural styles and dialects, multiform influences coming from Romagna, Marche and Umbria are shown; besides, very important artists as Michelangelo Buonarroti and Piero della Francesca were born there. End of the less among the beauty of the landscape, historical village, Arezzo's cooking has to be taste. It is the hardy Chianti from the Arezzo hills goes well with these robust dishes. For lovers of white wine, we recommend the Bianco vergine of the Valdichiana.
